Smooth, even walls are the canvas that great interior painting depends upon. No matter how expertly a colour is chosen or how carefully it’s applied, uneven, cracked, or poorly patched walls will undermine the result. At House Painting Sutherland Shire, our professional plastering and skimming services ensure that every surface we paint β or every surface you want to paint β is perfectly prepared and flawlessly smooth before a brush touches it.
We provide a full range of plastering services across the Sutherland Shire: skim coating entire rooms, patching and repairing damaged plaster and gyprock, resurfacing deteriorated walls, and new plaster application. Our team has over 30 years of combined experience across both plastering and painting, which means we understand not just how to apply plaster correctly, but how walls need to be prepared and finished for the painting that follows. Fully licensed (Licence #257400C) and fully insured.
Whether you need a single wall skimmed, a room fully resurfaced, or repairs patched and blended ahead of a repaint, we deliver precise, paint-ready results. Get a free quote today, or explore our related gyprock repairs, interior painting, and water damage repairs services.

Our Plastering Process
- Assessment & scope β We inspect the walls and ceilings, assess the extent of plastering required, and provide a detailed written quote covering all patching, repairs, or resurfacing.
- Preparation β Loose, friable, or damaged plaster removed. Surfaces cleaned, treated for mould or moisture if required. Metal beads and stop beads installed where needed.
- First coat (backing coat) β For thicker applications or full resurfacing, a backing coat is applied and allowed to cure fully before the finish coat.
- Finish coat application β Fine finish plaster or setting compound applied in controlled, overlapping strokes. Feathered to blend with adjoining surfaces where patching.
- Sanding & smoothing β After curing, surfaces are sanded to remove any tool marks, high spots, or imperfections for a silky smooth result.
- Inspection β We inspect under raking light to identify any remaining imperfections. The test of a quality plaster finish is how it looks under harsh side-lighting β not just direct light.
- Sealing β New plaster is sealed with appropriate PVA sealer before handover to prevent paint absorption issues and ensure even sheen in the topcoat.
- Handover β Fully cured, sealed, and paint-ready. Site cleaned of all plaster dust.
Why Professional Plastering Matters
Plaster and paint are inseparable β the quality of one determines the quality of the other. Paint applied to poorly repaired or uneven surfaces highlights every imperfection under glancing light. The roller lines, patchy sheen, and shadow lines that homeowners sometimes blame on painting technique are more often caused by inadequate plastering and preparation underneath.
Quality plastering is a skilled trade. The right mix consistency, the right tools, the right number of coats, and the correct application technique all contribute to a finish that paints out flawlessly. Skimping on plastering β using cheap fillers over large patches, skipping the backing coat, not sanding between coats β produces a result that looks fine at first but reveals its flaws the moment sunlight hits the wall at an angle.
Our gyprock repairs, interior painting, and water damage repairs work seamlessly with our plastering service to deliver complete, end-to-end interior restoration β from damaged wall to freshly painted room.

Frequently Asked Questions β Plastering
What’s the difference between plastering and filling?
Filling (using premixed patching compounds) is appropriate for small holes and minor cracks β up to about 50mm in diameter. For larger patches, deep cracks, or full wall resurfacing, proper plastering (using setting plaster or render) is required. Fillers shrink and crack over larger areas; plaster sets chemically and creates a durable, stable surface. We always use the right material for the scope of the repair.
My walls have texture (orange peel / knockdown) β can you match it?
Yes. We can replicate existing textures on patch repairs so they blend seamlessly with surrounding surfaces. Some textures are easier to match than others β we’ll assess during the quote and advise honestly on what level of match is achievable.
How long does plaster take to dry before painting?
New plaster needs to cure and dry fully before painting β typically 2β4 weeks for thick applications, but this depends on the product used, thickness, and ambient conditions. Thin skim coats can be ready in as little as 24β48 hours. We’ll advise on the appropriate waiting period for your specific work and seal the surface before handover to reduce paint absorption.
Can you fix the entire room if just one wall was damaged?
In many cases, a well-executed patch repair and repaint can be blended seamlessly into the surrounding wall. However, if you’re repainting the whole room anyway, skimming the entire wall (or room) gives a perfectly consistent finish that’s impossible to achieve with spot repairs alone. We’ll advise the most appropriate approach for your situation.
Do you handle plastering and painting as a single job?
Yes β and this is our preferred approach. We’re both plasterers and painters, so we control the entire process from damaged wall to finished, painted room. No hand-off between trades, no communication failures, and a guarantee that covers both the plaster work and the paint job.
