Holes, cracks, and damaged plasterboard are some of the most common maintenance issues in Australian homes — and one of the most visible when they’re not fixed properly. Whether from door handles punched through walls, nails pulled out leaving ragged holes, water damage causing sagging and staining, or simply the natural movement of a house causing cracks in corners and joins, gyprock damage is almost inevitable over time. At House Painting Sutherland Shire, we repair it properly — seamlessly, invisibly, and paint-ready.
Our gyprock repair specialists have over 30 years of combined experience in plasterboard repair and repainting across the Sutherland Shire. We fix holes of all sizes — from small nail holes to large impact holes and full panel replacements — and we finish the repair to the same level as the surrounding wall so it’s invisible after painting. Fully licensed (Licence #257400C) and fully insured. We also handle the subsequent painting, which means seamless colour matching and a flawless finished result from a single contractor.
Gyprock repairs are often part of a larger project — end-of-lease preparation, insurance restoration, pre-sale work, or a full interior repaint. Contact us to discuss your repairs, or explore our plastering, interior painting, and water damage repairs services for a complete solution.

Our Gyprock Repair Process
- Assessment & scope — We identify all repair locations, assess the method required for each (fill, patch, or panel replacement), and provide a clear written quote.
- Damaged material removal — For water-damaged or compromised board, affected sections are cut out cleanly to sound material. Installing new board over wet or soft gyprock is a mistake — we never do it.
- Backing & framing — For larger holes, timber or metal backing is installed to provide a sound fixing for the new patch. Patches screwed firmly to backing — not just glued or held with tape.
- Setting coat — Setting compound applied over the patch, tape embedded for joins, and the repair built up in layers allowing each to cure before the next is applied.
- Skim & feathering — Final compound skim feathered well beyond the repair boundaries to blend invisibly with the surrounding surface.
- Sanding — Cured repair sanded flat and smooth. Inspected under raking light for any residual marks or high spots.
- Sealing & priming — Repair sealed with PVA and primed before handover or painting. New gyprock compound is highly absorbent — sealing is non-negotiable for an even paint finish.
- Painting — Where we’re handling the painting, repairs are colour-matched and blended with the surrounding wall. Same-room or whole-wall repaint recommended for best results.
Why Proper Gyprock Repairs Matter
A patched wall that’s visible — with raised edges, sheen differences, or colour variation — looks worse than a consistent shabby wall. Bad repairs draw the eye precisely because they signal “something was here that shouldn’t have been.” For pre-sale properties, insurance claims, and end-of-lease handovers, poor repairs fail inspections and cost more to fix later than doing it right the first time.
Proper gyprock repair requires the right backing, the right number of compound coats, correct feathering technique, appropriate drying time between coats, thorough sanding, and proper sealing before painting. Shortcuts at any of these stages produce repairs that are visible, that shrink and crack, or that absorb paint unevenly, creating patchy sheen that betrays the repair even when the colour matches.
Our team’s combined expertise in both repair and painting means we consistently deliver invisible results. Our plastering, interior painting, and water damage repairs services provide the complete suite for any interior restoration project.

Frequently Asked Questions — Gyprock Repairs
How big a hole can you repair without replacing the whole sheet?
Holes up to about 200mm can typically be patched using backing timber or a California patch technique. For larger holes, a full section between studs is replaced for a cleaner, more durable result. We assess each hole individually and use the most appropriate method. We’ll always give you honest advice on what’s best for each situation.
Will the repair be visible after painting?
When done correctly — with proper feathering, sanding, sealing, and a full wall repaint — repairs should be invisible. The most common reason repairs remain visible is inadequate feathering (the patch is too abrupt) or the repair being painted without first properly sealing the new compound (causing sheen differences). We do it right every time.
Can you repair water-damaged gyprock?
Yes. Water-damaged gyprock needs to be removed and replaced — not dried out and painted over. We remove all affected board, check the framing for moisture damage, allow the cavity to dry completely, then install new board and finish it paint-ready. We can also advise on mould treatment before reinstating. See our water damage repairs service for more detail.
Do you also patch after electricians and plumbers?
Absolutely. After trades have done their work, gyprock repairs are one of the most common jobs we do. We patch chase lines, cable access holes, pipe access panels, and any other openings left by electricians, plumbers, and other trades. We work with homeowners and builders alike.
Should I repaint the whole wall or just touch up the repaired area?
For best results, we recommend repainting at least the entire wall (from corner to corner). Touch-up painting rarely matches the surrounding paint exactly — sheen levels, colour drift over time, and edge blending all work against a seamless touch-up. A full wall or room repaint always gives a cleaner, more professional result.
